Estate & Region

We source grapes from several sites around the Nelson region encompassing the Waimea Plains with its rich alluvial soils to the Moutere Hills and their intense clay loams. Nelson’s cool maritime climate allows us to produce distinctive wines from the various sub-regions.

The home-block vineyard, located near the iconic Upper Moutere Village was first planted in 1973 and contains a number of varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Montepulciano and the oldest commercial Riesling vines in the South Island. Kahurangi Estate was established in 1998 and continues to be a leading brand in the quality focused Nelson wine scene.

In exceptional years our winemakers carefully select the four best barrels of our finest Chardonnay. Every bottle is one of fewer than 1200 bottles in existence. 100% fermentation in a new French and American oak barriques for 12 months. After extended barrel aging, we carefully bottle and cellar for a further two years before release.

Wine Making

Starting with a warm spring, it continued on through a long, hot and
very dry summer and autumn resulting in superb, clean, ripe fruit
packed with intense flavours perfect for making sensational wine.
One of Nelson’s finest vintages. Our Four Barrels Pinot Noir came from three of our growers' vineyards on the Moutere hills and Waimea Plains.

Fermented in predominantly French oak barriques with a small portion
in American oak barriques for 12 months. A er extended barrel aging,
we carefully bottle and cellar for a further two years before release.

Tasting Notes

Four Barrels Pinot Noir displays generous plum, cherry
and ripe berry fruit aromas with a hint of so spice.
The palate is rich and showing layers of silky-smooth
dark berry flavours underpinned by subtle notes of dry
‘Provencal’ herbs. A beautifully balanced elegant, lush
wine with a lingering finish.

Cellaring Recommendation

Best enjoyed now through to 2030.

Reviews & Awards

5 Stars - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit 2022

By Sam Kim

It's seductively complex and enticing on the nose with dark cherry, smoked game, earthy mushroom and assorted nut aromas, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate displaying expansive mouthfeel and loads of fine polished tannins. Silky-smooth with sweet fruit richness and savoury nuances. At its best: now to 2030.

Rating: 94/100

Excellent - Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier 2022

By Cameron Douglas

Complex aromas of mixed baking spices and red berries, there’s a dry stone earthy quality with a touch of wood smoke and bacon. Nice weight and youthful tension on the palate with flavours of fresh and baked cherry, strawberry and baking spices from cinnamon to cedar and clove. Tannins layer in texture and mouthfeel and acidity provides freshness and contrast. The fruit flavours and decent structure will allow this wine to age and develop, plus it is immediately food friendly. Nice complexity and length with best drinking from early 2023 through 2030.
